The client for this child care centre in Melbourne’s South-West desired a contemporary, economical and functional building response, able to cater for a set amount of children. A long process of thought-out planning culminated in this edgy, playful design. The site’s north-facing aspect was exploited, bringing light in through expansive glazing on the front façade and creating an ideal ground level play area for children. Upstairs care rooms and play areas made efficient use of the site in light of numerous spatial constraints. A precast concrete construction saw a solution simple and quick to build, whilst a double-height, angled steel colonnade made for a focal point in the architecture. This project is still undergoing final iterations before entering town-planning.
